Wynonna Judd's Page

As you all probably guessed I am a big fan of Wynonna Judd. She is the best singer I ever heard. Actually, I only started liking country last year. I saw the TV movie about Wynonna and Naomi Judd. I fell in love with them and their music.
*
As of then I have been into country. I love The Judds, but Naomi no longer sings with her daughter, Wynonna. So, Wynonna is now a solo act.
*
This page is dedicated to Wynonna and Naomi and even Ashley Judd.
*
I am not an expert on them and will just tell you the things I know.
*
Naomi Judd was born Diana Ellen Judd on January 11, 1946. She was the first child of Polly and Glen Judd and they lived in Ashland, Kentucky. Two years later, Glenn Brian (they called him Brian) entered the world and became Diana's best friend. Other siblings included Christopher Mark (Mark) who was born when Diana was four and margaret Victoria who was born when Diana was six. I am not going to go way back into their family history, but I just want to say the song "Guardian Angels" was about real people, Naomi's great-great-grandparents, Elijah and Fanny.
*
When Diana was a teenager she met Michael Ciminella and they began to date. It was originally thought that Michael was the father of both Wynonna and Ashley, but it was just recently discovered that he is not Wynonna's father. This is all I will say on this subject because it is a private family matter.
*
In 1963, Brian was diagnosed with cancer. This was around the time that Diana got pregnant (with Wynonna). Diana and Michael got married on January 3, 1964 in a Baptist Church in Virginia.
Wynonna was born Christina Claire Ciminella on May 30, 1964 when Diana was only 18. They bonded right away.
*
Diana, Michael, and Christina moved and toughed out some problems. On November 6, 1965, Brian died. He was just seventeen.
*
On April 19, 1968, Diana gave birth to another little girl, Ashley Tyler Ciminella.
After some major problems, Diana decided it was best to leave Michael and make it on her own, with her two girls. It was hard, they moved a lot, from California to Kentucky and place to place.
Around 1975, Diana gave Christina an old guitar someone had given her. That day changed their lives. Christina took to it immediately and learned how to play.
*
Back in California, Diana decided to change her name... she had it legally changed from Diana Ellen Ciminella to Naomi Ellen Judd. Naomi was going to school to become a nurse, she graduated December 15, 1977.
*
Around 1979, Christina decided to change her name. The song "Route 66" was one of her favorites. A line from it says, "Flagstaff, Arizona...Don't forget Winona." They changed the spelling and Christina's name became Wynonna.
*
They got to Nashville on May 1, 1979... Music City, USA. This was where Naomi met Larry Strickland (her husband to be).
*
One day when Naomi was working as a nurse, she took care of a girl who recognized her from the Ralph Emery Show. The girl's father turned out to be Brent Mayer, who became their producer.
In 1982, Naomi and Wynonna got a recording contract with RCA.
*
In 1984, "Had A Dream (For The Heart)" came out as their first single, it hit #17. "Mama He's Crazy" was their first number one hit. "Why Not Me" and "Girl's Night Out" were their next releases, both hit #1. Other #1's to follow were "Grandpa", "I Know Where I'm Going", "Turn It Loose", "Young Love".

The Judds began to be a hit. Their songs hit the tops of the charts and the awards began coming in like crazy.
*
They went on tour as the opening act for the Statler Brothers... (eventually GARTH BROOKS would open for them).
*
Their songs continued to hit the top and they racked in more awards. They did tons of interviews too. In 1990, Naomi began to feel sick and was diagnosed on January 12, 1990 (my 15th birthday) with Hepatitis, but they weren't sure which one. The doctor ordered Naomi to stay in bed and slow down. She began having panic attacks and after seeking doctor's advice... Naomi turned to God.
*
In July, Naomi had to tell Wynonna she had to resign. Wynonna's first reaction was that she was going to quit too. Even though things were rough being with yer Mom all the time, Wynonna and Naomi loved each other very much and would do anything for the other. They had a love-hate relationship (like I do with my Mom). Naomi told her God gave her the talent to sing and that was what she needed to do. Soon after, Naomi married Larry Strickland.
*
In 1990, The Judds won best duo for the seventh year in a row. It was then time to tell the public that Naomi was sick and needed to resign, it was announced on October 17th.
It was then decided there would be a Farewell Tour. They booked 120 cities in America in a 12 month time frame.
*
During this time, Naomi kept herself close to God and her condition improved. The Judds last "on the road concert" was November 23, 1991. But, that was not their final concert...
*
Their final farewell concert was December 4, 1991 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, it got sold out. The concert aired on Pay Per View (and you can buy it in the stores NOW). Wynonna lost her voice just a couple days before the concert. With the help of a good doctor and probably lots of prayers, she got it back and was able to sing... (gee, I wonder if it was because of stress??)
Their final songs were "Grandpa" and "Love Can Build A Bridge". The emotions were obvious, with both Naomi and Wynonna in tears. Naomi said this to her daughter, "Life is all about embrace and release, embrace and release. Now you must spread your wings and fly my darling, and go toward the light. Go toward the light." The last thing Naomi said on stage as part of the Judds was (and this is my favorite quote) "I believe in the power of love and I believe there is always hope." (Words never meant so much to me in my life)
*
All in all, the Judds had 23 hits. They got eight CMA awards and four Grammy's. Album sales sorared to over 11 million worldwide, including six gold, three platinum, and one double platinum.
*
At the age of 27, Wynonna found herself out on her own. She signed with a new label and debuted at the AMA's singing "She Is His Only Need". She had four singles hit number one from her first solo album which was self titled. "I Saw the Light" "No One Else On Earth" and "My Strongest Weakness" were the others...
*
Her next album was Tell Me Why. Number one singles from this album included: "Only Love" Other singles were "Tell Me Why" "Is It Over Yet" "Girls With Guitars" and "Rock Bottom". Her first album went triple platinum and her second album went platinum.
*
Wynonna released a new album called: Revelations (in 1996). Already released are: "To Be Loved By You" which hit #1, "Heaven Help My Heart" which hit #10. Other songs released were "My Angel is Here" and just recently "Somebody to Love You" . I'm not sure where these two stand in the charts or if any more will be released. This album (as well as these others are great!)
*
Wynonna had her first child December 23, 1994. His name is Elijah Judd Kelley. (Boy, is he adorable!!) His father is Arch Kelley. Wynonna and Arch got married in December (I think) and in January, Wynonna announced she was pregnant again. I got to see her April 2, 1996 in concert in Tuscon, AZ. She was very pregnant and still managed to give an awesome performance.
*
Her second child was just born on Friday, June 21, 1996 (I think) weighing 9lbs 4oz. Her name is Grace Pauline Kelley.
*
One of the reasons I love Wynonna is because of her attitude. I love what she stands for and the person that she is. She is my idol (after God of course) and I would do just about anything (legal) to meet her. I think she is a good hearted person and hopes she will forever do well.
*
Now....as far as I know... Wynonna took some time off to spend with her new baby girl.
I got to see Wynonna again in concert at the Arizona State Fair. I had 2nd row seats but they were on the side, equal to 8th row on the floor. Wynonna was great!! Her stage presence is amazing! I love how she interacts with the audience and just puts on the best concerts!!
*
UPDATE! I just got back from seeing Wynonna in concert at Ceasar's Palace up in Vegas. Let me tell you, this girl sings when she's pregnant, when she's sick... everything! Poor Wynonna had to cancel one of her shows because she was really sick, I was supposed to go to that show, but since it was cancelled we had to go the next day, Sunday, December 1st. She was still sick, but put on an awesome performance. We had front table seats... SHE WAS RIGHT THERE!!! And I sat there cheering her on!! She even looked at me, and smiled.. and oh Wow!! I'm on what I call, a Wynonna High!! I will be walking on air for about a week, I seem to get this every time I see her in concert.
*
We tried to get backstage, but she was really too sick. So, NEXT TIME!!
Other projects Wynonna is working on or just finished include a duet with Kenny Rogers called "Mary, Did You Know", this is on Kenny Roger's Christmas Album "The Gift". She did a duet with Kenny Loggins "Tonight" for a CD called "Songs Of West Side Story". She has also done other duets, including one with Michael English, one with Tammy Wynette, and some other various artists. In other words she keeps busy!
The grapevine says she should be back in Vegas soon and also has 2 new records coming out in 1997. I can't wait! I just hope it's true!!
*
Naomi wrote a book called "Love Can Build A Bridge" and a TV movie was aired about their lives.
*
Ashley Judd is an actress staring in "Ruby In Paradise", "Heat", some HBO movie about Maryiln Monroe, and most recently "A Time To Kill".
*
A couple of Wynonna's favorites are:
*
Car: Her candy apple red '57 Chevy
*
Books: The Bible and the dictionary
*
 Food: Mexican and Italian
*
Color: Solid black or solid white (to wear)
*
Song: Amazing Grace (one of my faves too)

My biggest dream is to meet her. I hope some day she'll know what a REAL fan I am.
*
 *UPDATE*
Well, my biggest dream kind of came true. I attending two shows at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas. One was Saturday, February 22 and the other was Sunday, February 23. Both days Wynonna noticed me... BUT... on Sunday, she came over to where I was sitting, (Front Row!!) and I handed her up a picture of her I had gotten through the fan club. Attached was a marker. She took it and smiled. She then signed it: "To Talia Love Wynonna". Then she gave it back to me and put out her hand and took mine. She looked right at me, smiled, and said, "YOU GO REDHEAD!" Then she squeezed my hand, grinned that sassy grin, and winked. OH WOW!!!!! I was in Heaven!!!!! I FINALLY GOT HER AUTOGRAPH AND SHE TOUCHED ME!!! WAHOO!!!(I'm never changing my hair color!!)
